SAMAA — Arabic in origin — means to listen, to hear, to receive.
The act of being present. It also names the sky, the atmosphere, the vibe.
The visual identity is built to hold all of these meanings at once.

I · The Symbol

An eight-petalled whirl,
still at the centre.

The SAMAA mark is built around a single gesture — eight petals turning around one point. It draws from the geometry of the Sufi whirl, where the dancer moves and yet remains; from the eight-fold rosette of Mughal floor plans, where every direction radiates from a centre; and from the simple bloom of a garden flower, opening without urgency.

Eight is the number of completion in many cultures, but in SAMAA it carries no theology. It is here for its sense of movement that returns to itself — the way a piece of qawwali circles its refrain, the way a story keeps coming back to the line that mattered.

II · The Mehrab

The arch that opens
a room into a courtyard.

Across the SAMAA identity — on posters, on the website hero, framing each artist's portrait — you will find the mehrab arch. The same arch that frames a niche in a mosque, a doorway in a haveli, a window in a Mughal miniature.

It is here not as religious symbol, but as architectural memory. The mehrab is the shape we associate with stepping from outside to inside, from ordinary to set apart. SAMAA borrows it for the same reason — to mark the threshold an audience crosses when they sit down to listen.

III · The Colours

Wine, dusk, and
the glow of a lit lantern.

SAMAA's palette is a lantern-lit courtyard at dusk. Deep aubergine and wine carry the base. Mulberry and claret deepen the middle ground. Old gold marks the dividers. A dusty rose carries the voice. And a single lantern-flame coral marks the moments that ask to be remembered.

There are no whites in SAMAA. No flat blacks. Every colour holds warmth, because the festival itself is built to hold warmth.

IV · The Type

A serif that sings,
a sans that listens.

Two families carry the SAMAA voice. Cormorant Garamond — a revival of the old Garamond — handles every display moment: the wordmark, the section titles, the curators' pull quotes. Its italic is the soul of the brand. It is where SAMAA speaks softly.

Inter handles the body. Quiet, legible, modest — designed to disappear so the words can do their work. Together they form a conversation: the serif speaks, the sans listens.

V · The Calligraphy

A hand-lettered Nastaliq,
still to come.

The Urdu script across SAMAA's poster system carries the festival's name in Nastaliq — the calligraphic tradition that grew across Persia and into the Indian subcontinent. It is the script of Ghalib, of Faiz, of the dargahs whose qawwali we will host.

The current renderings across the identity are placeholders, set in available digital fonts. The final mark will be hand-lettered by a calligrapher of the Nastaliq tradition. The festival owes itself, and its inheritance, that care.

"A festival is
a kind of letter.
Read it slowly."

VI · The Voice

Soft, deliberate,
never urgent.

SAMAA's voice is built to slow you down. Sentences are short. The italic is reserved for the lines you would underline. Headlines do not shout; they invite. We do not say "buy tickets" — we say join the gathering. We do not say "contact us" — we say write to us. We do not say "sponsors" — we say founding partners.

This is not branding. It is hospitality, written down.

Held together, these are the elements of SAMAA. The mark, the arch, the colours, the type, the calligraphy, the voice. Each one chosen to make the festival feel like itself, before a single note is played.
