Nizami Bandhu — Sufi Qawwali at SAMAA Festival 2026
Day One · Evening Concert

— Sufi Qawwali

Nizami Bandhu

The Nizami Brothers carry one of the longest unbroken lineages in qawwali — descended from the line of singers who have performed at the dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya for over seven centuries. Their voices are not trained for the stage. They are trained for the courtyard, the candle, and the saint.

"There are nights when their qawwali stops being a performance and becomes the air itself. SAMAA exists to make room for those nights."

The Profile

Khusro Nizami, Chand Nizami, Shadab Nizami — the present generation of the Nizamuddin Auliya gharana. Featured in Rockstar, performed at Jashn-e-Rekhta, Sufi Mahotsav, and Hazrat Nizamuddin's annual urs.

What to Expect

Two hours of qawwali built around classical kalams of Amir Khusro and Bulleh Shah, opened with a hamd, deepened by tarana, and closed — if the courtyard agrees — with Chhaap Tilak.

Date Sat, 5 Dec
Time 8:30 – 10:00 pm
Stage The Mehfil
Day One · Twilight Recital

— Saaz aur Samaa · Classical Sitar

Ustad Shujaat Khan

Of the Imdadkhani gharana — the lineage of Ustad Vilayat Khan, his father. Shujaat Khan plays sitar in the gayaki ang, the school where the instrument is made to sing as if it had a human throat. Grammy-nominated. Quietly revered across three continents.

"A sitar in the right hands does not perform. It confides. Ustad Shujaat Khan's evening at SAMAA will not be a recital — it will be a conversation the audience is privileged to overhear."

The Profile

Padma Shri-conferred. Founding voice of the Indo-Persian Ghazal Group. Has performed at the Theatre de la Ville, Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall. The bridge between khayal vocal tradition and modern instrumental concert.

What to Expect

An alap that opens slowly, a jor that finds its rhythm, a jhala that arrives unannounced. Followed by a thumri or two — sung as much as played. Tabla accompaniment by a senior disciple.

Day Two · The Headliner

— Shaam-e-Mehfil · Folk, Fusion & Soul

An evening with
Papon.

Angaraag Mahanta — Papon — carries the folk traditions of Assam in one hand and a modern songwriter's restlessness in the other. His Bihu, his Bollywood ballads, his unreleased poetry-set-to-music — all of it sits together in a single evening that flows from open-throated joy to quiet hush.

"The closing night of SAMAA needed a voice that could hold both celebration and stillness. Papon is that voice."

The Profile

Founder of The East India Company band. Voice behind Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, Jiyein Kyun, Kyon. National award conversations. The artist most likely to make a 2,500-capacity garden feel like a living room.

What to Expect

A 90-minute set with full band. Bihu opening. Bollywood ballads in the middle. A solo segment on harmonium toward the end. The garden likely sings along to at least three songs.

Day Two · Afternoon Session

— Ishq aur Alfaaz · Storytelling

Laksh Maheshwari

A storyteller who refuses to be a comedian, a poet who refuses to be a performer, and a writer who insists on being read aloud. Laksh blends Urdu couplets with personal essay, history with hesitation, laughter with the kind of pause where the room re-learns how to breathe.

"Words that connect. Stories that stay. Some evenings at SAMAA will not be about music at all — and this is one of them."

The Profile

One of India's most-followed Urdu storytellers across digital platforms. Featured at Jashn-e-Rekhta. Author and curator of contemporary Hindustani writing. Known for his Ishq aur Alfaaz live series.

What to Expect

A 75-minute solo set. Three or four interwoven stories, each opening with a sher, closing on a thought you carry home. No screens. No props. Just voice and the listening it asks for.
